The rainbow stretched from me to thee
The day was mainly rainy, but rainbows appeared over Cowichan Estuary. Don and I were separated by mere miles - he in Everett and I on Vancouver Island. He says he saw the same red ship nearby the next day. By Sunday he was Chicago bound having been turned away from the border not once but twice. It will be seven months before we see each other - the longest in our lives together.
Two Love Boids
The day after Don was denied entry to Canada I saw these crows - they made me long for his company.
Going Solar
On Friday September 25 we officially went net zero. Cause for celebration except for the fact that that was the exact same day Don was refused entry to Canada.
Upstairs
The front room resembles a little chapel.

Sanding almost completed
A light sanding prepares the floors for painting
Southern sun light streams into the bedroom
This is the exposure that makes it possible for us to solar power the house
The upstairs hall looking east to west
Transoms, the old stair and floors plus new dormers and ceiling all at play
New floor being laid as seen through the front window
We repaired the floor upstairs but laid a new fir floor on the main level.
The beautiful siding is getting put up by the giant front window
The contrast between the shingle and the wood is especially beautiful
Looking from kitchen to the front door with the old stair in the middle
paper is protecting the newly laid floor - tilework and sanding and priming are all happening at once
At last the trailer and port a potty move out
And we can get on to the important task of excavating the front yard. Oh happy day!
Front yard seen coming up Fernwood from the south
The temporary electrical pole is down and the yard is being dug up
Heavy equipment makes fast work of the concrete path and driveway
The concrete steps will be “reworked” and brick clad. In digging several layers of sidewalk were revealed. All that was taken away was chopped up spit out and rebroadcast on the site. Amazing!
Peering out at the garden where the magnolia will be planted one fine fall day
It is so thrilling to look out at this space - scarifying and aerating and irrigating and soil amending will precede tree planting
Looking down from the front room
You can survey the scope of the work on the front yard - all done in a day.
Ivo is measuring the marble for the kitchen counter as he and David discuss how to cut the slab for most dramatic effect
I once again made a pilgrimage to Matrix Marble in Duncan to be sure that the counter and backsplash work together as well as possible.
We are going to require 5 yards of gravel and are hoping to use something local to British Columbia and plain jane in look and price. Some of the stuff comes from as far as Mongolia!
POTUS and FLOTUS contract Covid
In the early hours of Friday morning we got the news. It is too soon to say what impact this dramatic development will have on national security, the election or the supreme court nomination at hand. An October surprise rings in the month.
