If the number zero in the top right hand corner doesn’t put a spring in my step, nothing will. We did a test (see Metric page) back in March of 2019 months before renovation began. At that point air tightness was poor - We estimated it at 14.42/air exchanges per hour. By the time of the post construction test in February 2020, we’d managed to get that number down to 2.67/HR. Energy consumption went from 292 G/J/YR (gigajoules per year) to 37 G/J/YR. We get to ZERO because our solar panels generate as much power as we use (and then some).
Compared to a typical new house, our house uses 53.2% less energy. In fact it uses 73.4% less energy when calculating our estimated energy consumption for lighting, appliances and electronics. Space heating dropped from 86% of all energy used to 21%.
Quid est demonstratum - Net Zero can be achieved in a hundred year young house. Outstanding work on the part of the entire team for executing what the model called for practically perfectly!
